The best birthday dinner ever

So! Things have been completely nuts for the last month (hence my lack of posting). I’ve been trying to find a job, stressed about not having one, crying at the state of my bank account, simultaneously bored and too busy…it’s been mental. Despite my year-long vacation, I felt like I needed a break.

Luckily, I got one! I landed a job with an absolutely amazing company, was invited to perform in a few shows, and my friends have been spoiling me left, right and center. Ain’t life grand?

My birthday is coming up tomorrow (!!OMG!!) and my friends Carole and Andrew wanted to take me out to celebrate. They picked the place, Guu SakaBar, and it was honestly one of the best birthday dinners I’ve ever had.*

(*Sorry mom. I loved your Hamburger Helper too!)

Guys, this place is insane.

From the moment you walk in the door you’re greeted with club music and a bunch of Japanese people shouting at you. SHOUTING. I don’t know what they were saying, but it was fucking intense. We were seated at one of the many long tables (luckily the server wasn’t yelling when she asked us if we wanted anything to drink) and took a look at the menu.

Guu SakaBar is an Izayaka style Japanese restaurant in the heart of The Annex. The closest I can compare it to is kind’ve like a Japanese tapas place; you order a bunch of small dishes and share them. And guys. Holy crap. The food was amazing.

The seared tuna melted in my mouth, the deep fried prawns had a perfect prawn/breading/spicy mayo ratio, the kimchee quesadilla (I know!) was fantastic, and the calamari in spicy ketchup was just perfect. We had a LOT of food  and it was all VERY good.

Andrew *really* liked it.

As I took my last bite, a bunch of people started yelling at me and I turned around to half the staff singing me Happy Birthday with a giant – GIANT – bowl of ice cream and grapefruit. By the time they finished, the entire restaurant was yelling at me and wishing me happy birthday. It was so much fun!

It was HUGE!

It was HUGE!

Honestly, my dinner at Guu was one of the best meal experiences I’ve ever had, and was probably the best birthday dinner ever. The atmosphere is electric, the food was amazing, the staff was friendly, and I cannot wait to go again. It’s a bit pricey, so it’s great for special nights…and be sure to go early! If you’re looking for a great evening, check it out. And take me. I’ll go any time.

This could be you. With me. Please.
